COVID & THE 3 THINGS WE SHOULD THINK OF DURING LENT—CHASTITY, ALMS GIVING, AND PRAYER

by His Excellency Bishop Richard N. Williamson

Sermon for the 1st Sunday of Lent, 21st February 2021

{Selection and transcription : Rafael Andrés Escribano}

«…Out of pride, men have resolved that the good life is money, science, and government… They’re blind to the things of God, they’re blind to the things of the spirit, and God is punishing {them} with Covid.

And nothing else than Covid is necessary for people to realize that you cannot trust, you cannot believe in money, science, and {government} UNLESS they are moderated and framed by the things of God. Then they’re in their place. Money is useful and {when it is} in its place it’s extremely useful; governments are intrinsically necessary to human society but they’ve got to be under God; and {when} science framed by the true philosophy, the true theology, Queen of the Sciences, then science is useful in all kinds of ways, but when it pretends to be itself the Queen of the Sciences then it’s a deadly distraction from getting to heaven, and men are blinded by the glories of science, the supposed glories of science.

So, there’s a {Godly} reason for Covid. It’s very unpleasant, all its consequences, everything that’s built around it and built upon it is very unpleasant but it’s necessary. Modern man is turned away from God, he has now made completely normal the slaughtering of the innocents in the sanctuary of life, which is the womb of the mother—that’s become completely normal. And it’s a “right”, a “human right”, and so on and so on.

How blind men have made themselves! And it’s going to take something like Covid, and all the consequences of Covid, and all the miseries following on Covid to wake people up and to give them a chance of turning back to the things of God and to the pursuit of heaven, without which if they don’t pursue heaven they certainly won’t get there.

So, Covid, by showing up that money, science, and governments are what they are—the pursuit of the flesh, the concupiscence of the eyes, and the pride of life—by showing them up for what they are, Covid would help many souls to get to heaven.

And for the Catholic, the individual Catholic, chastity (the self-control against the lust of the flesh), alms giving (against the lust of the eyes, the glory of the world), and prayer (against the pride of life), the prayer by which I ask God for all that I need for, which I need ultimately from Him, the things that matter.

And these are the 3 things that I should think of during Lent.»
